Facts About Nepal

Nepal

Nepal is a landlocked country in South Asia, situated between India to the south, east, and west, and China to the north. Despite its small size, Nepal is geographically very diverse, ranging from the lowland plains called the Terai to the high Himalayan mountains. It is home to Mount Everest, the tallest mountain on Earth, which attracts climbers and tourists from around the world.

Climate: Nepal has a very diverse climate because of its different altitudes. The southern Terai region has a tropical climate with very hot summers and mild winters. The hilly region experiences a moderate climate with warm summers and cool winters, while the Himalayan region remains extremely cold and receives heavy snowfall in winter.

Transportation: Nepal’s transportation system includes roadways, airways, and limited railways. Road transport is the most common means of travel, although many mountain roads are narrow and challenging. Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu serves as the main international gateway.

Education System in Nepal

Education in Nepal has been modelled on the Indian system, which is in turn based on the educational structure of the old British Raj. The National Examinations Board supervises all standardized tests, while the Ministry of Education is responsible for managing educational activities across the country. The National Centre for Educational Development functions as Nepal’s official teacher-training body.

Historically, Nepal’s education system was based on home-schooling and traditional gurukuls, where students learned under the guidance of priests or Gurus. Before Nepal became a democratic nation, access to formal education was limited and mainly available to elite groups.

Nepal’s first formal school, Durbar High School, was established in 1854 and was initially intended only for members of the ruling class. The establishment of democracy in 1951 significantly expanded access to education, allowing broader sections of society to benefit from structured schooling.

In 2012, the Supreme Court of Nepal ordered a three-year moratorium on tuition increases, which was also challenged by private institutions. Over the years, the national government has made multiple efforts to introduce tuition-free and compulsory education, reflecting Nepal’s ongoing commitment to improving access and quality in the education sector.
